Top Tips for Flower 2: Double Pinwheel Tutorial

Tip 1:

When choosing your fabric make sure there is enough contrast between the two flower fabrics. Choose one that is fairly dark and another that is lighter. This will make the pinwheel effect more visible. You can read more about value here.

Tip 2: Pay attention to the orientation and placement of the light flower and background fabric triangles. They need to be sewn together as shown in the pattern for the pinwheel to work.

Tip 3: Start sewing the triangles from the corner that is 90 degrees. This will help the pieces feed through the machine better.

Tip 4: When sewing the large triangles together, place the edge of the triangles as close as you can to the needle to help prevent the machine from eating it.

Tip 5: We are sewing along the bias edge of the triangles, so be careful not to push or pull the triangles as you sew. Let the feed dogs do all the work to avoid stretched seams.

Tip 6: Press the final seam open to avoid bulk. You may wish to use some steam or spray to set it.

You may also want to consider this fanning technique for the final seam.
