Over 40 Scrappy HST Triangle Quilt Layout Ideas!
When I started designing foundation paper-pieced Scrappy Half-Square Triangles in the fall of 2017 I had no idea they would be so popular and that so many quilters would use them to make an astounding variety of quilts. This post contains pictures of over 40 stunning quilts that have been made with Scrappy Triangles. I have divided them into rough groups to highlight similarities and differences.. The makers’ names are found underneath the photos.
Dramatic Dark Background
While not a specific layout, a solid dark background can make Scrappy Triangles pop and almost shine. Each of these quilt layouts is different, but all are eye catching.
Flying Geese
One fun option is to put two Scrappy Triangles together and make flying geese! (You can also purchase Flying Geese foundations in 5 sizes here!)
Or put the Scrappy Triangles on point to get the same flying geese effect.
Classic Half-Square Triangles
There’s also nothing wrong with keeping it simple. There is a reason half-square triangle quilts have remained popular for hundreds of years.
Concentric Squares
There are also a ton of different secondary designs that can be made with the Scrappy Triangles. Squares and concentric squares are a popular way to arrange Scrappy Triangles.
Paths and Swirls
Breaking up the concentric squares into a series of lines and swirls opens up all sorts of cool layout possibilities. Sorting the Scrappy Triangles by color gives intent and order to the quilt.
Squares
These quilters used four Scrappy Triangles to make on-point squares.
These next quilts have sashing that cuts through the squares.
Pole Twist
I love this block setting and the 3-D affect of Scrappy Triangles circling the poles.
Zig-Zags
You can never go wrong with a zig-zag layout!
All Scrappy With No Background!
These next quilts blew me away! Laura and Yvonne made the scrappy side of 2 Scrappy Triangles, but instead of adding the large background triangle, they trimmed and sewed the two scrappy sides together to make a scrappy square. That is taking scrappy to the next level!
Wow! So many fun ideas and so much inspiration! Let’s give these quilters a hand!
